The Surprising Link Between Procrastination and Addictions

We are all familiar with procrastinating. We may even consider procrastination to be a problem we really need to address.

If we are fortunate to not have an obvious addiction, we may not see the link between procrastination and subtle unconscious addictive patterns such as substance addiction, disordered eating, porn, or other compulsive habits.

Where does procrastination come in? Procrastination is a symptom of being in the grip of an addictive pattern. And procrastination protects the addictive pattern!

All of the habitual patterns that cause us to suffer are addictive patterns. But when we label them “bad habits” we get comfortable with them. It’s a way of enabling them. “Bad habit” sounds kind of innocent, doesn’t it? We even take a certain pleasure in commiserating with our friends about our bad habits without really working to change them.

Can you sense an emotional difference when you think of a habit pattern as an addiction? Does it seem more harsh, and even shameful, to label a bad habit an addiction? If so, that is actually a good thing – IF it arouses a determination to get free of the self-destructive behavior. Having this kind of determination is akin to an essential basis of all 12 Step programs: humility. That is, dropping the fancy deflections and admitting we actually have a problem that we can’t handle alone.

In this 4-part webinar beginning Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Jack will show you how to come to terms with the seriousness of  limiting habitual patterns as addictions, without having to carry the unnecessary burden of shame or guilt. When you can face your addictions free of shame and guilt, you discover a new clarity of mind and a positive emotional energy. These fresh qualities of aliveness unfold your natural capacity to relate to the world with joy instead of acting out joyless, boring, addictive habit patterns.

Most participants report feeling ease, lightness, and inner peace growing within just a few minutes of practicing Jack’s methods. In each of these four sessions, there will be plenty of time for discussion and Q&A.
